Nudged: Check out the local specialty cheese shop

Background: I’ve lived in my current neighborhood for over a decade, yet for some reason I can’t explain, I’ve never stepped inside the specialty cheese shop across the street from one of my favorite restaurants. I’ve walked and driven past it a million times. I’ve even parked in front of it and peered in the front window. Friends rave about this place, about its offerings and its owners. What’s it going to take to get me in the door?

This week’s Nudge.

As always, make this your own. Maybe this is the week you visit a new-to-you branch of your local library, or the knitting shop that seems to call out to you, or the tiny historic building you’ve always meant to explore.

What Happened: I was so pumped for this Nudge, I even got dressed up to go out! I arrived at the shop just as it was scheduled to open at 10 am on Monday, only to discover that they are closed on Mondays. Phooey. And pivot! I decided instead I would check out a tiny wine shop on the way home, only to discover there was no parking in that area from 10 to noon on Mondays. Re-pivot. 

Tuesday morning I got in my car with fresh intentions, and my efforts were greatly rewarded. As soon as I walked across the threshold, I knew I was in a special place. More than just a cheese shop, it was a tiny grocery with a spectacular array of cheeses, sandwiches, and gourmet offerings.

That wasn’t all. I spotted a sign that advertised “We have French butter.” Oh. Mon. Dieu!

After a lovely chat with the proprietor, a man with whom I hope to be on a first-name basis one day, I left with a small slice of Manchego cheese and a $7 package of butter. An extravagance, perhaps, but my total cost came to less than $12 and my mouth watered all the way home.

I treated myself to a lunch of kings and queens. Not fussy or expensive, but oh-so-very-special. Every single bite was delicious.

The Ah-Hahs: A delight for all my senses. The “discovery” of another neighborhood treasure. The possibility of more culinary adventures in my future. It took me only 10 years to make it happen.

Nudged: Explore a new used-book store, spend just $10

Backstory: Of all things, this Nudge was inspired by a character in a book I read last year (wish I could remember the title). The character would only read books he could purchase for $5 or less. What an interesting challenge! I also love that this Nudge is a way to support a local small business.

Speaking of great small bookshops, I’d like to give a shout-out to Dudley’s in Bend, Oregon. In their cozy space, they offer new and used books, as well as an espresso bar. This fabulous staircase (pictured) leads to the seating area.

What happened: I know this is partly due to COVID shutdowns, but it has been ages since I’ve been able to just browse, and it takes all my willpower to not stock up on books online. But with this Nudge in mind, I was determined to pick up something for less than $10 for myself.

I did a reconnaissance of the space, checking out the various sections—travel, local history, mysteries—before deciding to focus on fiction. Mixing things up, I began perusing the shelves at the end of the alphabet. At first it was fun to see titles of books I’ve already read and be reminded of the pleasure they gave me. Then I stumbled upon one that looked familiar. I was pretty sure the title was on my list of recommendations from friends, but I couldn’t remember reading it. I pulled it out, and sure enough, it was something on my To-Read List—and it was only $5. I also found the perfect pick-me-up gift for a friend, a novel by a local author I think she’ll love. And the price was just $5—wahoo!

Can I also add, it felt really good to pay in cash.

 

Ah-Hahs: Stop and enjoy. Not scrolling online, not buying based on reviews, but seeing and holding the actual books. What a tactile, thoughtful treat.

I wasn’t in the shop long, but it was such a pleasant and calming experience that it recalibrated my day. And I didn’t have to spend a fortune. I’m quite pleased by the fact that I got all this for so little.

52+: Lessons from Alexandra Epple’s 2,800 km life-affirming adventure

Alexandra Epple inspires me and challenges me. I introduced you to her in a mid-August 2019 post, when she was about halfway through her adventure of walking the Camino de Santiago—a pilgrimage path that runs through France and Spain—in search of what she needed for the next chapter of her life. Some 2,800 kilometers later, she arrived at her new home in December, and I’ve been waiting for the right time to catch up with her, to ask “Did you find what you were looking for?” I had high expectations that her answer, and the revelations she experienced, would blow my mind.

Alexandra’s story began long before her boots hit the trail. She grew up in Germany, in a “super awesome and supportive family”, then went to college in Germany and England to earn her degree in business administration. “It was all about money,” she told me in one of our early get-acquainted chats, and she was quickly disillusioned by the future it presented for her. Determined to find her purpose, she set off on world travels, by herself, and explored Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and other countries and cultures until she followed her heart (and a guy) to America. “Although I never had any interest or intention of going to the US, I was looking for a new direction,” she said. “The time, situation, and person I was dictated the direction, and it was a ‘following of the heart’ [versus following what society dictates] kind of thing.”

That was in 1999 and, in California, Alexandra continued to follow her heart and her curiosity. An interest in stretching led her to a yoga class, which led her to pursue healing work. She healed herself, then she worked with women to help them achieve “radical body wisdom” through body work, yoga, and coaching.

Then, about 10 years ago, a small voice in the back of her mind got her wondering if she needed to move back to Germany. The whispers grew louder until fall of 2018 when intense anxiety and worries set in. “I’d wake up at 4 am, have a cry for an hour, and say ‘Holy shit, what do I do with this?’”, she told me. “I knew something big was about to happen, but didn’t know what it could possibly be.” On one hand, she welcomed the tears, which she felt were cleansing. “I was quite proud that I was able to just observe the tears, worry, and anxiety like a bird,” she said. “I just let all those tears run and emotions flow without being swept away by them.” On the other hand, she thought, “Life is too short to be this unhappy.”

Her moment of clarity, in January 2019, was a visceral experience, which she described as “There’s a knowing inside, that you just have to do this.” Listening to and trusting her body, which gave her signals through expansion and contraction, she knew “I’m just done. It’s not going to happen here.” She felt a strong calling to return to Germany. “Every cell said yes yes yes!” she said, and for the first time in months she felt quiet and at peace. Her next move, she said, was “inspired by my soul’s calling to be alive.”

For the next six months she “dismantled” her life by shedding physical things: house, car, insurance, a phone number. She packed up and shipped what she wanted to take with her, then, feeling the need for a transitional period, she decided to walk—seriously walk—to her next destination.

On the Camino de Santiago, Alexandra experienced a different kind of shedding. She let go of all past pressures—such as tasks related to marketing and building a business. She shed old identities and focused on what she needed in the moment, what brought her joy. “You just walk,” she said, when we talked recently via a video chat. “There’s no planning. You can’t ever stop thinking—that’s the job of the mind—but there is a simplicity that is so tremendously enjoyable,” she said. “Walking, eating, sleeping—there is nothing complicated about life. It’s the simple act of walking and being. What a gift.” In the process, she recommitted to her core values: freedom, inspiration, wisdom, sharing, compassion, and being joyful.

She chronicled her trek on her blog Spirit Journey, sharing sites and insights. Ancient churches, seashells, tenacity, awe, weather, boredom, socks, and blisters were topics of her engaging posts. She addressed the highs and lows, both altitudes and emotions. I had looked forward to talking with her after she reached the city of Santiago de Compostela (approximately 900 km in), to finding out what she’d uncovered and learned, but then she surprised me again. She felt the call to keep walking—all the way back to Germany. Finally, on December 20, four and half months after she took her first steps, she arrived at her parents’ house and treated herself to an epic bath.

How have you grown and transformed? What were the BIG CHANGES that happened as a result of this grand adventure? Have you figured everything out? What’s next? I eagerly awaited her answers.

“It was Life-affirming, not life-changing,” she told me. “I’m still looking for answers.”

What?! How can this be?

I wasn’t the only one baffled by this response. She told me about meeting a couple toward the end of her walk. Upon hearing that she hadn’t solved all of life’s questions on her quest, the man said to her, “But you’ve had five months to think about it!” The woman quickly corrected him with, “That’s not how it works.”

It’s hard not to feel frustrated when you’re faced with the so-called gift of a blank slate. Alexandra explained to me that while walking, she thought about the past, lived in the moment, and did not try to figure out what comes next. So her answer to my question was a legitimate “I don’t know,” and she further confessed, “At times, I judge myself for having such expectations of life.” She feels somewhat trapped by her excellent skills and past work experience. Does she return to her former business model? Will she devote energy to finishing 7 Secrets to a Better Menopause, her book on how to navigate menopause with compassion? Or is now the time to go after her dream of hosting a talk show about alternative health?

So, she returns to what she does know, that she will listen to and follow her intuition to take the next steps on her life path. “My basic needs are met right now,” she said, and “my journey of reinvention is ongoing.”

And that’s my takeaway from our conversation: The journey of reinvention is ongoing. “I got to this place in my life step by step,” Alexandra said. “Every opportunity I have, I ask, ‘Does this feel right?’” We ask, and when the answer comes, we follow our hearts and head in the direction that feels right to us in the moment, learning more about our authentic selves with each step. It’s more about the journey than the destination, I tell myself.

“I have to lean back and trust that the road is already there. I just need to start walking it even if I don’t have a map of the entire path yet,” Alexandra said to me. “It’s just like the Camino. You start walking it, and the path reveals itself.

Nudged: Make a list of cities I want to visit, pick 1 to explore

Backstory: Back in my single gal days, for years I dreamed about going to Italy. Every time the new Backroads‘ catalogue arrived in the mail, I ripped out the pages describing the walking tour of Tuscany and pinned it to my wall. One day I decided I had wasted too much time dreaming and was ready to do something to make it happen. Almost a full year in advance, I booked the tour and put down a sizeable deposit. Then every spare dollar went into a savings account so, by the time I boarded the plane, everything was covered.

This nudge is in part inspired by the success of that planning and adventuring. Today I can’t kid myself about swinging a big deposit (if you can–go for it!), but I can start visualizing my next trip and motivating myself to make it happen.

Once I’ve made my short list of cities, I might go to the library and pick up history and cook books. I might check out cultural music online. I might add a language app to my phone and start practicing the words and phrases I’ll need to be a respectful traveler (please…excuse me…thank you). Or maybe I’ll put together a list of movies set in that city and begin “seeing” myself there.

What I know for sure is I’ve been bitten by the travel bug and I’m starting to itch. I’m looking forward to exploring where I might go.

What Happened: I started by looking up the “best cities in Portugal to visit” and discovered Lisbon, called the “postcard-picture capital”. OMG, gorgeous! A “sea power”, Portugal is known for its temperate climate, beautiful beaches, fishing industry, and port and madeira wines. Sign me up!

But first I needed to look into Buenos Aires, Argentina. Friends who have visited describe it as the “Paris of South America”, featuring spectacular architecture, delicious foods, and world-class culture. I researched online and discovered it is home to a diverse immigrant population with a multitude of languages and has the largest Jewish population in Latin America. This “sexy” city hosts more than 300 plays every weekend and all sorts of cultural and music festivals (the International Jazz Festival that includes dance classes caught my eye). It also has so many libraries and bookstores (734 bookstores, “more per person than any other city in the world”), it is called the “City of Books”. Sounds like my kind of town!

Buenos Aires is also known for it’s beautiful gardens, including its Japanese Garden, which…wait…. Oh, wow….

The Ah-Hahs: For those of you who have been following 52Nudges for a while, you may recall my trip to Portland, Oregon, a little over a year ago. While there, at the recommendations of friends and family, my husband and I explored the fabulous Japanese Gardens. We were blown away by it. Then at one point we looked at each other and asked, “Don’t we have one of these at home?” Yes. Yes we do, just 15 minutes from our house. (Read the Nudged post here.)

I still have not been there.

So I kind of kicked myself as I worked through and processed this week’s nudge. Right here, right now, I have access to great architecture, world-class museums, food from just about every culture, language schools, cafés set up for sipping while people-watching, gardens and paths for walking, and just about everything else I’m hoping to find through travels beyond my own city’s borders. Why is it that I feel the need to search for things I already have here?

And then…and here’s where things get goosebumpy…

Why is it I feel the need to search for things outside of myself when maybe, just maybe, everything I need to feel fulfilled is already within me?

Why do I feel the need to do more, do differently, try, achieve? What if…what if for a while I am just still and allow myself to be fully me?

Like with every nudge, I never know where it’s going to take me. This one really surprised me, and I’m grateful for it. Maybe this was the ultimate nudge I’ve needed all along.

I’m still processing this, and don’t know how it will play out. I’m calm and excited at the same time.

Nudging: Learn something new about my city’s history

Backstory: It’s embarrassing to admit, but I have now lived in my “new” city for over a decade and there’s still so much I don’t know about her!

So this week, I am nudging my inner history geek to do some research. I might look into a walking tour (something that I do regularly when I travel, but that languishes on my to do list here), pick up a book, watch a documentary movie, visit our library’s photo archives, or search for old maps.

If you and your city are already well acquainted, take this opportunity to research a city you’ve always wanted to visit. Do a little armchair traveling, and maybe it will inspire your next adventure!

Nudging: Say “yes” to something new

Backstory: When I was putting together The List, I almost pulled this nudge off. It feels kinda vague. But on final review, I kept it because it forces me to be in the moment, to be open to whatever may come.

Will I be invited to a social event that feels outside my comfort (or fashion) zone? Will I see an opening in a class that’s just a little outside my (financial or intellectual) reach? Will I get an opportunity to experiment on something that’s always looked like fun but had me doubting my ability to even try?

We’ll find out! 🙂
